বিস্তারিত দেখুন: The country's main transportation company, Bangladesh Railway, is a government-owned and -managed business. It employs a total of 25,083 regular workers over a length of 2955.53 route kilometers. The railway connects the entire length and breadth of the nation, making it a crucial form of inland transportation, Its robust growth inevitably aids in the nation's economic progress. Up until June 2, 1982, a Railway Board made up of a Chairman and four members was responsible for overseeing the development and management of the railway. However, the Railway Board was disbanded with effect from June 3, 1982 for administrative and operational reasons, and its duties were transferred to the Ministry of Communications' Railway Division, whose secretary doubled as the Director General of Bangladesh Railway. The railway was divided into two zones, East and West, for the same reason, and is now administered by two general managers who answer to the director general of Bangladesh Railway. On August 12, 1995, the day-to-day management of the Railway was subsequently detached from the Ministry and given to a director general chosen among the Railway specialists. A nine-member Bangladesh Railway Authority (BRA) with the Minister of Communications as its chairman was established to provide policy recommendations. All administrative and policy-making tasks are carried out with the Director General's assistance by the Joint Director General and Additional Director General. Various specialized departments that are in charge of operation, maintenance, and financial management support the general managers of the two zones. The fundamental operational unit is two divisions, which are again divided into each zone. Divisional Officers from several specialized Departments, including Personnel, Transportation, Commercial, Finance, Mechanical, Way and Works Signaling & Telecommunication, Electrical, Medical, Nirapatta Bahini, etc., help the Divisional Railway Manager, who oversees the division. In addition to the two workshop Divisions, one at Pahartoli and one at Syedpur, one in each zone, each one being led by a Divisional Superintendent. There is also a locomotive facility in Parbatipur run by the Chief Executive for general overhauling of both BG&MG locomotives. For coordinating and offering advice on the accounting and financial management activities of the two zones, Bangladesh Railway also has a Railway Training Academy with a Rector in charge, a planning cell with a Chief Planning Officer, a stores department with a Chief Controller of Stores, and an accounts department with an Additional Director General/Finance. Government has established a separate Directorate under the Ministry of Communications to inspect various BR works associated with train operation in order to ensure the safety of rail transit.
